Choosing the correct water pump for your pond can make all the difference in the world. Just because a pump may cost less to buy it does not mean it is the correct pump for your pond.
There are several factors to take into consideration when purchasing a new pond pump. The most important thing is to get a balance between the running costs and the performance of the pump which can affect the whole performance of the pond.
As electric prices seem to be escalating, it is important to ensure you know how much your preferred pump is going to cost each month to run. However it must be pointed out that in order to run your pond efficiently you will require the correct pump for the job: hence the balance to be made between efficiency and running costs.
In an ideal situation, and as a basic guideline, you will need to pump all the water in your pond through the fitration system every two hours. Therefore a 5,000 gallon pond will require a pump capable of circulating the pond water at a rate of 2,500 gallons per hour. In addition to the size of your pond water volume, external factors must be taken into consideration such as length of pipe runs and the peripherals attached to your system such as UV's, heaters etc. To a certain extent the number of bends in your pipework run will reduce the the flow of most pumps when they are attached to the system.
In order to maintain a healthy environment for your koi pond or water garden, you MUST run your fitration system 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, therefore costs and more importantly reliability are paramount to a successful pond and the health of your fish.
Pond pumps basically come in three types by design. There are submersible pumps, which as the name suggests are installed in the pond's water and are normally used on pump fed systems or to supply water features etc. Dry mounted pumps are designed to be installed in dry conditions externally of the pond's water, and finally dual purpose pumps which can be installed in both dry and wet conditions.
One important thing to consider if your pump is installed externally from the pond water, i.e dry mounted. Where the filter and pump are housed in a filter chamber below gound level, and there is a chance of flooding, it may be best to install a dual purpose pump which will not get damaged if accidentally submerged.
Here at Dankoi we have a large selection of pond pumps to suit every scenario and installation type. If you require help on the best choice for yourself, please don't hesitate to contact us.
