Most filter media have a both a mechanical and biological function. Settlement chambers such as sieves, drum filters etc allow gravity to drag the solid waste out of the water by slowing the water flow. Usually such filters come first in a filter system.  Then biological filters take over and provide the habitat for the nitrifying bacteria to live and remove the harmful by-products from the water.
